Abstract

Six faba bean varieties (Vicia faba major)were selected. The surveyed crops were cultivated in cylinder plastic drainable lysimeters and were subjected to four water quality salinity levels (fresh water as control, water of 3, 6 and 9 dS/m)using surface irrigation system (gated pipe). The work was done to classify the salt tolerance degree of the surveyed varieties. Several plant parameters were analyzed: water use efficiency (WUEb and WUEg)leaf area, dry matter for leaves, shoots and roots, the number of leaves, plant height, number of shoots, the number of flowers, the number of poods per plant, number of grains per pods, leaf senescence, leaf water potential, stomatal conductance, grain yield and weight of 1000 seeds. The results obtained highlight the special performance of three varieties: R-40, Giza-2 and Giza 3 that seem to be better adapted to produce at medium salinity level. While ILB 1814 was sensitive one.
