Résumé

This work was conducted in the greenhouse of the MAI of Bari to evaluate the response of two hybrid tomato cultivars to irrigation with saline water of an EC value lying. Two cropping techniques were used: soilless technique with gravel, pozzolana and perlite as inert growing media, and the traditional cultivation technique in soil medium. The soilless culture technique proved its advantages in eliminating the problems caused by saline irrigation on soils, doubling the production for both the investigated tomato varieties, improving both physical and chemical tomato quantities, increasing the efficient use of fertilisers as well as anticipating the time needed for full maturity. One of the interesting points studied is the quantity and quality of tomato production in relation to the number of bunches the plant bears. The results were in favour of the plants with lower numbers of bunches.
